Cate Baldwin is an artist working across painting and installation. Her portfolio needed to do one thing exceptionally well: present the work itself, at high fidelity, without the site’s own design competing for attention. I designed and developed the site end to end, from layout and typography through the production build.

The direction came from the work: restraint. Generous space, quiet typography, and a structure that lets each piece breathe. Navigation stays minimal—selected works, exhibitions, and an archive of older pieces—so the path to the art is never more than a click away.

Every animation on the site earns its place by serving the work: transitions ease the eye between pieces rather than calling attention to themselves, and all motion respects the visitor’s reduced-motion preference.

The site is built with Next.js, with image optimization doing quiet but important work: high-resolution documentation of the art is served responsively, so paintings and installation shots stay sharp on large displays without slowing the experience on smaller ones.
